The Dalit Students’ Union (DSU), University of Hyderabad President Mr Santhi Swaroop Sirapangi and Ex President Mr Harinadh Siluveru met Mrs Meira Kumar, the then Hon’ble Speaker of the Lok Sabha at Raj Bhavan, Hyderabad. Mr Narayana, one of the active Non Teaching Madiga Employees of the University ensured this meet. The following were some of the photographs of this occasion.
Continuing the tradition set by the Dalit Students’ Union (DSU), University of Hyderabad for the past few years a ‘Beef Stall’ was set up during the annual 2012 Sukoon. During 2011-2012 I served as President of the Union. Mr Krupakar Madiga was invited to inaugurate the Beef Stall. The following were some of the photos of the inaugural session.
Dalit Students’ Union (DSU), University of Hyderabad took prime activism for getting Beef served as part of University’s annual Students’ Cultural event Sukoon from the academic year 2005-2006 or so. There was a huge opposition to this, primarily from the students’ inclined towards the Hindutva ideology, i.e. Akhil Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). As a result University administration too felt uncomfortable at some point of time to conduct Sukoon and permit DSU to host a ‘Beef stall’. This dilemma and conflict went for about two academic years or so.
DSU leadership during 2007-2008 academic year took a decision to seek a formal representation from the National Institute of Nutrition (NIN), Hyderabad about the status of Beef as a food menu. In this respect, a special representation was forwarded through me to the then NIN Scientist Dr Veena Shatrugna seeking to clarify certain doubts about status of Beef as food menu. I handed over representation to Dr Veena along with Mrs Gogu Shamala at NIN office, Hyderabad on February 14, 2008, on behalf of the then DSU President Mr Praveen Veluvolu. As a response to this representation Dr Veena was kind enough to clarify misconceptions about the status of Beef and went-on to enlist the nutritious values of Beef. The formal representation presented by Dr Veena about Beef is as follows;
Based on this formal representative clarification of Dr Veena – DSU sought University’s support to extend proper support for the Beef Stall as part of 2007-2008 Sukoon festival. Taking into consideration the above representative clarification of Dr Veena, the then University administration headed by Vice Chancellor Prof Hasnain released certain guidelines for hosting of Beef Stall. Thus, DSU was able to put an end to the Beef Stall controversy on the University Campus!!
