Memories of Dr Nagappa Gari Sundara Raju

Dr Nagappa Gari Sundara Raju was one of the most illustrative icons of Madiga Literature in Telugu.  He did his Masters in Telugu and Doctorate  from the Department of Telugu of University of Hyderabad. Dr Darla Venkateswara Rao, one of the prime associates of Dr Nagappa Gari Sundara Raju documented his association with him and his life history too, in Telugu; under the title of the volume ‘Oka Madiga Smruthi: Nagappa Gari Sundara Raju Parichayam’.

Dr Nagappa Gari Sundara Raju had close association with Dalit Students’ Union (DSU), University of Hyderabad; in-fact, he was regarded one of the founding members of DSU.

While I was going through the archives of DSU, I came across some of the documents directly related to Dr Nagappa Gari Sundara Raju. Presently, I wish to share them with you here.

These two pictures indicate the poetic response to Dr Nagappa Gari Sundara Raju’s sudden and sad demise. These is no mention of name of the writer on these pages. DSU preserved these well, without getting spoiled for all these years. This must be written by a close associate of DSU and Dr Nagappa Gari Sundara Raju.

These documents indicates the hand-writing of Dr Nagappa Gari Sundara Raju, on a controversy. I assume original documents must be available with Dr Darla Venkateswara Rao, Department of Telugu, University of Hyderabad; and DSU too managed to have a xerox copy of the same.

Source of all documents is DSU archives.

Christianity on Caste and Regional Lines at University of Hyderabad

Christianity is one of the highly polarized religion in the entire world; on many aspects like region, ethnicity, denominations, etc. This kind of same polarization can also be observed in India. At University of Hyderabad too Christianity is highly polarized – notably there are three Protestant Christian denominations operating on the Campus; one is Evangelical Students’, second is North East/Naga Students Christian Fellowship and the third is HCU Friends. Among these three, I was told, that Evangelical Students’ group is the oldest and this organisations organizes Sunday prayer service on the Campus itself, as it had a tie up with a local Church. Some of the Christians go out of Campus too to visit their preferred denominations and take part in the Prayer services, etc, but, the students’ who are unable to go out of Campus takes part every Sunday in the Prayer service extended by the Evangelical Students’. In fact, Evangelical Students’ activity continues very vigorously on the Campus, almost every day prayer services takes place in one hostel or the other, especially in the evenings. And, in various other modes too like special meetings on the occasions of Christmas, etc.

HCU Friends is also another Christian organisation. This organisation doesn’t organize any prayer service prominently on Sundays. But, it conducts separate prayer services in the hostels, and organizes separate meetings on some special occasions like; Good Friday, Christmas, Valentines Day (Indirectly denounces this earth’s loves and propagates that Lords love is the ultimate!!), etc.

Most of the observes doesn’t know that there is a caste dimension between these two – Evangelical Students’ and HUC Friends platforms. If one carefully observes at these two organisations – they are lead by two separate prominent Scheduled Castes of Andhra Pradesh, i.e. Madiga and Mala respectively, though openly such differences were not shown!!

And, Christian activism on regional dimension can also be prominently observed by having a separate look at the activities of North East Students’/Naga Students’. Campus community very well knows that the Naga Students’/North East Students’ continues vigorously their Christian religious fervor at many parts of the Campus. But, presently, I humbly express my inability to confirm you whether it is by the whole of  North East/only by a particular state persons like Naga’s, etc.

This picture is taken from the archival source of Dalit Students’ Union (DSU) of University of Hyderabad, and this picture is depicting that a Freshers Party was organised by the Evangelical Students’; and for this occasion this paper sheet comprising of songs were distributed.

As per my strong memory this programme was organised at Dr B R Ambedkar Auditorium on the Campus.

Dr K R Narayanan’s Condolence Meeting at University of Hyderabad

Dr K R Narayan, the Former President of India passed away on November 9, 2005. The condolence meeting in honor of the Departed Soul at University of Hyderabad was organised by Dr B R Ambedkar Students’ Association (ASA) & Dalit Students’ Union (DSU) on 17 November, 2005 at Dr B R Ambedkar Auditorium. In-fact, this was the first collective event of the these two Dalit organisations at University, which were basically divided on Mala and Madiga lines over the Scheduled Castes Reservation Categorization issue in Andhra Pradesh. This kind of collective activities in some respects, in this way continued up-to the next academic year, i.e. 2006-2007. From the starting of 2007-2008, the changed leadership of ASA showed much dislike and intolerance towards continuation of this kind of activity.

Dr B R Ambedkar Students’ Association (ASA) & Dalit Students’ Union (DSU) Together

In the history of ASA and DSU, they worked together starting with the organisation of Condolence meeting of Dr K R Narayanan, the Former President of India in November 2005.

The present pictures depicts (as a sample) the details of the same, how ASA & DSU made attempts to work together.

Harinadh Siluveru’s Political Carrier at University of Hyderabad

During the 2005-2006 Students’ Union Election at University of Hyderabad, Dalit Students’ Union Member Mr Harinadh Siluveru was fielded as a candidate for the post of Sports Secretary and he was successful in election. In fact, University Discussion Forum (UDF), Dr B R Ambedkar Students’ Association (ASA) & Dalit Students’ Union (DSU) contested together as a panel, following their annual tradition, during this election too.

This was the poster released by the Dalit Students’ Union (DSU) on the Campus expressing gratitude after election of Mr Harinadh Siluveru as Sports Secretary for 2005-2006 to represent the Students’ Union.

This seems to be the agenda presented by Mr Harinadh Siluveru when contested as Cultural Secretary of Students’ Union for 2006-2007. Able to trace out from DSU archives.

This picture indicates; how DSU made attempts to expect possible questions to Mr Harinadh Siluveru, when he was about to face Open Dias at DST auditorium as part of 2006-2007 Students’ Union election, in which he was fielded to contest as Cultural Secretary.  One can also observe how Beef became a major problem to DSU, as it created rucks by organizing Beef Festival as part of 2005-2006 Sukoon for the first time!!

Mr Harindah Siluveru hails from Warangle district of Andhra Pradesh (Telangana region). One’s observation towards him reveals how enthusiastic he is politically!! His political activeness can be observed from various dimensions – like he had been politically successful on the Campus in various forms. He was able to represent in the Students’ Union twice as Sports Secretary during 2005-2006 and immediately next year he was successful in re-representing the Students’ Union as Cultural Secretary (i.e. 2006-2007). He was the main person behind the establishment of Telangana Students’ Association (TSA) too on the Campus for the first time. And, in due course of time this TSA emerged as a successful platform. He served as President of the Dalit Students’ Union (DSU) for the academic year 2008-2009. In-fact, I humbly recollect my memory in this regard; when he was the President of DSU, I served as General Secretary!! While he was serving as DSU President got married in 2009. He seemed to have faced many troubles with the peak of Telangana agitation of 2009-2010, especially from the police forces, and also seemed to have faced trouble at this juncture to manage both the married life and activism for Telangana.

Crisis of ‘University Discussion Forum’ (UDF) at University of Hyderabad

University Discussion Forum (UDF) was one of the most significant student organisations at University of Hyderabad, inclined towards left ideology. This platform (UDF) turned as Students’ Federation of India (SFI) during 2006-2007 academic year, which too was inclined towards left ideology.

I

During 2005-2006 academic year UDF seemed to have faced much internal crisis. The present poster released by one of the UDF’s member informs us the same. This issue was a big one on the Campus during the starting tenure of 2006-2007 academic year.

The above controversy resulted in split of UDF and a rebel UDF panel contested the election for 2006-2007 Students’ Union under independent category. The details of this rebel UDF independent panel can be observed in the following manner.
